Clérambault führt als eher durchschnittlicher Künstler ein bürgerliches Leben bis er von der patriotischen Propaganda vergiftet wird, die der französische Staat während der Mobilmachung zum ersten Weltkrieg unter seiner Bevölkerung entfacht. Durch den Tod seines Sohnes zur Besinnung gekommen verschreibt Clérambault sein Leben dem humanistischen Ideal, welches jenseits von Nationalität, Religion und Politik ethische und moralische Werte verkörpert - nur scheint dafür unter den menschlichen Herdentieren kein rechter Bedarf zu herrschen.
