What if a life of lucky breaks isn’t luck at all—but the result of showing up, taking risks, and staying curious? Tom Huening has lived many lives: Catholic schoolboy turned teenage troublemaker, Navy pilot turned Vietnam skeptic, TWA pilot turned entrepreneur, politician turned spiritual seeker. Through it all, he kept asking one question: How do I live a life that matters? From Cold War cockpits to California politics, from Catholic confession to rational spirituality, Huening charts a course through the defining experiences of the American twentieth century—always propelled forward by curiosity, gratitude, and a healthy dose of luck. Tom's latest book (May 2nd release) is Got Lucky, Patriotic Catholic Confronts Country and Church. Inside you’ll find: • A Navy pilot’s firsthand account of Vietnam-era service and the moral reckoning that followed • An honest, irreverent examination of faith, Catholicism, and building a personal spiritual life on your own terms • Stories of risk, reinvention, and resilience across careers, continents, and decades Got Lucky is a candid and humorous memoir for readers who have wrestled with faith, questioned authority, and wondered whether the path they’re on is truly their own. More than a story of one man’s extraordinary ordinary life, it is proof that luck favors those willing to keep asking what comes next. Tom's career includes carrier-qualified Navy jet fighter pilot, commercial airline pilot, lawyer, CPA, elected county supervisor, and controller. His recent book, Thomas Jefferson's Bible, Freedom of Religion in America, updates the founding president's cut and paste Bible version and renews the founding father's call for religious freedom and separation of church and state. Huening once hosted Spiritual Choices, a local TV program interviewing local and national spiritual leaders with disparate points of view and in August 2024 released Spiritual Choices, Putting the HERE in Hereafter (2nd edition). Tom earlier wrote about a renegade priest in The Quintessential Good Samaritan, The Authorized Biography of John Joseph Kelly, Champion of Social Justice, released by Post Hill Press in 2022.
