I'm a freelance writer and documentary filmmaker based in New Haven, CT, USA. I spent more than a year embedded as a journalist in Pivot Projects, a global collaboration focused on using collective intelligence, systems thinking and modeling, and AI research tools to help communities become more sustainable and resilient. Out of that experience came my book, The Pivot: Addressing Global Problems Through Local Action, which was published by Columbia University Press in November, 2021. I have spent most of my career working for newspapers and magazines, including the San Jose Mercury News and BusinessWeek. My most recent books include The Pivot; Rise of the Data Cloud, which I co-authored with Frank Slootman, CEO of Snowflake Inc., and Smart Machines, which I co-authored with John Kelly, who was then the head of research at IBM. I grew up in a coal mining town in Western Pennsylvania.
