His second, "At All Costs," about the naval convoy that turned the tide of World War II, earned starred Kirkus and Publishers Weekly reviews. His third book, a parenting memoir, "It Doesn't Get Any Better Than This," will make you laugh and make you cry, according to one reviewer. His latest book, "River Without a Cause," a narrative nonfiction deep dive into Theodore Roosevelt's first descent of the Amazon's River of Doubt, as re-traced in treacherous whitewater by a misguided expedition, has also earned rave reviews. Sam has been deputy editor of AutoWeek magazine, where he won the Ken Purdy Award, automotive journalism's highest honor; for years he drove nearly 100 new cars a year, writing online car reviews subscribed to by 4000 websites with 36 million viewers per month. He has raced cars and motorcycles from Daytona to the Australian outback desert, where set and still holds a record of 190 mph on an unfaired 1500cc Kawasaki he built himself, a bike known as the Naked Ninja. Find him on Instagram, samjamesmoses, where he describes himself as a 78-year-old wannabe waterman minimalist exile living on a tropical island or two. In addition to exploring the shorebreak closeout chaotic waves of his Bullshark beach in way west Bali, he's currently writing a final memoir, to be titled "Paradise My Ass."
