Following graduation from the University of Notre Dame, Mike spent several years working as a construction laborer, truck driver, and dock worker. His days as a laborer trying to get into medical school are chronicled in BLUE COLLAR, BLUE SCRUBS. His years as a surgical resident at the Mayo Clinic, where he was an inveterate moonlighter in rural Minnesota emergency rooms, are the subject of HOT LIGHTS, COLD STEEL. Mike’s third book, ALL BLEEDING STOPS, tells the story of Matthew Barrett, idealistic young combat surgeon in the Vietnam War whose care and compassion eventually overwhelm him. Mike's latest book, THE SHIELING, follows David Carroll, a wrongly accused doctor running from both the FBI and the Russian mob. David hides in a shieling--a remote shepherd's hut--in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland where he meets Catriona Gordon, an anthropologist. Together, David and Catriona face a final reckoning as the Russian mob closes in.
