Just out this spring is my new novel, THE SURROGATE, a family drama set during the Great Recession of 2007-09. Alex, the thirty-year-old narrator who is a psychologist, enjoys the benefits of a close-knit family. Her mother and aunt are twins married to two close friends, and Alex, an only child, and her two cousins, Rolf and Stephen, grow up as if they are siblings. When Rolf is killed in a car accident, Alex’s entire family springs into grief and chaos. Nathaniel, a mysterious art museum curator, soon enters their lives and seems to offer the family solace. The family dynamic quickly begins to shift and questions of identity, trust, and sexuality emerge.
from two early reviews of THE SURROGATE:
"Original, deftly crafted, and a fully engaging read from start to finish, "The Surrogate" admirably showcases author Lynn Miller's remarkable gift for the kind of character and narrative driven storytelling style that lifts her novel to an impressive level of literary elegance."—Midwest Book Review
"Suffused with intrigue and a gripping melancholy, Alex’s internal journey is at once believable and profound.”––Kirkus Reviews
THE LOST ARCHIVE, a collection of stories in 2023, received the gold medal for short story collections from the Midwest Independent Publishers Association. Fraught relationships, mistaken identities, mysterious disappearances, and the search for love play out in these stories.
My fourth novel, THE UNMASKING, came out in 2020 and is an homage to the locked-room mystery beloved by Agatha Christie and others. The novel is a mystery involving a group of friends at a festival celebrating the performance of famous women in history. My third novel, THE DAY AFTER DEATH, was a 2017 Lambda Literary Award finalist in lesbian fiction.
Earlier novels are THE FOOL'S JOURNEY and DEATH OF A DEPARTMENT CHAIR. I'm co-author of FIND YOUR STORY, WRITE YOUR MEMOIR.
