John Jantunen has never been jailed for his political views, fought in a war, or hallucinated giant lizards. He does, however, share the same convictions about writing with several authors who have. Namely, that only by fully engaging with the world can one create vital works of literature, that memory is an author’s most valuable tool, and a writer should always read both widely and deeply. Prior to settling his family in Kingston, Ontario, John travelled extensively across Canada, living and working in almost every region of the country, and has translated these experiences into seven novels, numerous short stories and a dozen screenplays. ECW Press published his debut novel, Cipher, in 2014 and it was shortlisted for a Kobo Emerging Writer prize. He followed this with A Desolate Splendor in 2016, No Quarter - Book I of The Tildon Chronicles - which was nominated for Shamus & ReLit Award Award in 2018, Savage Gerry, a thriller set in Ontario's north, in 2021, In For A Dime - Book II of The Tildon Chronicles - in 2022 and Mason's Jar, in the spring of 2023.
