D.M. Burgess has spent decades writing, sometimes intentionally, sometimes out of pure habit. Over the years, notebooks, digital files, and the margins of documents filled with observations about leadership, people, and the strange ways organizations actually function. Many of those ideas began as nonfiction reflections drawn from real-world experience, documenting the moments where theory collided with reality. At the same time, Burgess has long explored storytelling through fiction. Drafts of imagined worlds, characters, and conflicts sit alongside practical notes about leadership and human behavior. Some stories were finished, many were not, but each piece of writing helped sharpen the same skill: observing people and understanding what drives them. That instinct for storytelling started early. Growing up, Burgess listened to countless stories from his father, stories about life, people, challenges, and the unpredictable situations that shape character. Those moments sparked a habit of cataloging stories, mentally and on paper, long before writing became something serious. His father also fueled a deep love of cinema, where powerful storytelling on screen expanded Burgess’s imagination and appreciation for narrative, character, and pacing. What began as listening eventually turned into documenting, and documenting eventually turned into writing. That blend of fiction and nonfiction thinking shapes Burgess’s work. His nonfiction focuses on practical leadership lessons grounded in experience rather than complicated theory, while his fiction explores larger themes of power, conflict, loyalty, and human nature. After years of unfinished drafts, quiet observation, and thousands of notes, Burgess finally brought those lessons together in his first published book, If It Works… Keep Doing It, a straightforward reflection on leadership that values common sense over complexity and people over process.
