Sadie Alden has been having a tough week. A huge question mark hangs over her relationship with Miller, and things only seem to be getting worse. As Hallow Haven prepares for the May Day celebrations, Effie and Kate are trying their best to keep Sadie busy. They can only distract her for so long. Sadie quickly learns that the first day of May is significant in the witch calendar, and for some residents, it is important for all the wrong reasons.

Elizabeth Sutton has moved back to her sleepy hometown in the English countryside and worries that her exciting days are behind her. She couldn’t be more wrong. Her work as a reporter for the town’s newspaper rarely involves covering a big story, so when she is sent to take notes at a local meeting about proposed building work, she thinks it will be just like any other. A wild group of protesters outside the town hall are shouting so loudly that Liz can barely hear what anyone is saying. In the days that follow, everything Liz thinks she knows about her town proves false.

Elizabeth is happy to be back in Black Bridge, a quaint English town where the mornings are cold, and the tea is hot. It seems she’s not the only one that finds it the idyllic place to be as the surrounding fields are suddenly overrun with travelers—something that several locals are unhappy about. Now that Elizabeth is working full time for The Herald, the town’s newspaper, it’s her job to cover the story, and she soon realizes that there is more going on than meets the eye.

Sadie Alden is still processing recent events but distracts herself by throwing all her energy into redecorating her house. Is she trying to avoid the truth? Obviously…but this new pastime is taking her in some unusual directions. A dispute on the far side of the main island threatens to become violent, but when Sadie and her guardian arrive, it seems that they are already too late. The warring neighbors both claim to have no knowledge of how a dead body found its way to the base of the cliffs beside their property, but at least one of them is lying.
