The Man Within is Graham Greene's first published novel (1929). The story is set on England's South Coast and concerns Francis Andrews, who reluctantly became embroiled with a gang of smugglers. The novel opens with Andrews desperately fleeing over the downs and eventually reaching an isolated cottage. He finds it's the home of a young woman, Elizabeth, who is alone and recently bereaved of her guardian, protector, and possible abuser.

Francis Andrews has spent years drifting between smuggling crews and bad decisions, convincing himself he doesn't belong anywhere. When a failed smuggling operation leaves him hunted by former allies and forced into hiding, he finds refuge in an unlikely place: a small rural community where trust is hard-earned and redemption seems impossible. As Andrews begins to form real connections—especially with a woman who sees more in him than he believes exists—he's forced to confront the battle between the man he has been and the man he could become.
