Christmas Eve in the year 3060, and the planet Puxatornee is home to a prosperous human colony. A spacecraft has arrived in orbit carrying the Slithergees, a race of obsequious alien slugs. Their home world has been destroyed and they are humbly requesting permission to settle on the first moon. And if they don't get permission, then they are humbly threatening to declare all-out war. He was last sighted taking a shuttle to the holiday resort of Paradise 5, then never seen again. The Doctor's curiosity is piqued.

Following a spot of uncharacteristic intoxication, the Doctor wakes to discover that the TARDIS has materialised in the service ducting of the Vipod Mor, a huge craft which is itself floating in deep space. Furthermore, the console has detected time spillage: someone or something is tampering...

The prehistoric Earth is dying. Thunderclouds roll across the skies, cloaking the land in darkness. The seas crash and boil as the rain turns to acid. The remnants of the Silurian race place themselves in suspended animation deep below the surface. One day they will awaken and reclaim their world.... The Tardis materialises on the USS Eldridge after the Philadelphia Experiment has gone disastrously wrong. Most of the crew are dead, the ship is disintegrating and the Doctor soon realizes that the problem comes from another dimension.... As they attempt to find a way to get the ship home, the Doctor and Peri visit the distant planet Capron and meet its tyrannical ruler, Osloo. But the search for a possible solution only creates increasingly dire problems. Osloo's horizons have been widened - and space and time are hers for the taking....

Tracking a nexus point in time, the Doctor meets Dr. Evelyn Smythe, a history lecturer whose own history seems to be rapidly vanishing. The Doctor must travel back to Tudor times to stabilise the nexus and save Evelyn's life.
