Cash Hollow is where I grew up; it was an unusual place. We were surrounded by hills on each side of the road, with offshoot veins of other roads crisscrossing throughout the hollow. Animals were like something from the prehistoric age, from giant box turtles to otters; it was wild, but most of all, it could be scary. It was dark without any overhead street, lamps, or even guardrails to keep a car from tumbling down mountainous ravines; it was a magical, treacherous, spooky place to grow up, and I loved it.

Manny appears throughout the Noir universe and hints of his past are shown but never fully revealed, that is until now. He needs to be seen as he was and what he came to and how he got there. It is no secret this is my favorite book to write to date. In fact, if I am not mistaken, my very first full origin story and I Loved every minute of it. So much so I did not want it to end, and being that it is an origin I had to decide where I wanted the cutoff of his story to be.

When he comes back from fighting in Europe, he finds the city is upside down, there are new rules in place, new criminals have taken over, and to make matters even more fun, his wife has left him but returns with some gangsters hot on her heels. Did she take the money and kill her "gangster" boyfriend? Or is she wholly innocent? And what of Doc Weaver? He is now a turn coat and wanted by the mob as well and in the middle is Jack Manson.

This book does fall into the same universe as my other series of books I call the Noir series. In those books you can hear about the gritty world of detectives, reporters, and gangsters. Well, that world exists here as well except here you have men and women who are willing to work outside of the law on both sides to get a job done. Whereas the other books focus on the aforementioned detectives, private and otherwise, here the focus is more on the ones that hide who they are.
