Lady Chatterley's Lover was the subject of one of the most infamous trials of the 20th century when Penguin was prosecuted under the Obscene Publications Act. However, with expert witnesses for the defence, including E.M. Forster, Penguin was acquitted and permitted to publish in 1960. The book became a best seller largely on account of explicit scenes of a sexual nature and use of four letter words.

D.H. Lawrence's famous short story, set against the background of the First World War, and examining the quintessence of Englishness, relationships and paternity in an idyllic rural setting. Egbert and Winifred are deeply in love when they first marry and settle in the picturesque thatched cottage which Winifred's father has given her on his estate. But as their relationships develops and alters, and as they have children and become increasingly dependent financially on Winifred's father, the cracks in their relationship become ever deeper.

Short stories have always been a sort of instant access into an author’s brain, their soul and heart. They can lift our lives into locations, people and experiences with a sweep of landscape, narration, feelings and emotions that is difficult to achieve elsewhere. The zenith of Empire is bookended by two catastrophic wars that slaughter vast swathes of humanity. The story of the physical relationship between the aristocratic protagonist Constance Chatterley and gamekeeper Oliver Mellors - which occurs right under the nose of her wheelchair-bound husband, Clifford. In exploring the class system of the early 20th century, the novel also touches upon the declining coal mining industry, its effect on the workers, and the politics which surrounded it. Yet possibly the most important theme is the individual’s need for physical as well as intellectual satisfaction.

Written in 1926... and published posthumously [without the authors customary revision] in 1930, The Virgin and the Gypsy is a minor masterpiece in short story writing. It provides an excellent introduction to Lawrence’s work, being a succinct distillation of his ideas about sexuality and its ability to transcend class barriers.

D.H. Lawrence tells the story of Constance Reid, also known as Lady Chatterley, who is married to Sir Clifford Chatterley, an aristocrat who becomes paralyzed from the waist down during World War I. Their marriage suffers due to Sir Clifford's disability and his obsession with his writing and intellectual pursuits. Feeling neglected and emotionally isolated, Lady Chatterley begins an affair with the gamekeeper, Oliver Mellors. Their passionate and physical relationship contrasts sharply with her cold, sterile marriage.

Lawrence’s first novel tells the tale of a love triangle between Lettie Beardsall and her neighbors George Saxton, son of a farmer, and Leslie Tempest, the local mine owner's son. Lettie will marry Leslie but remain sexually attracted George. George also marries but falls victim to alcohol.

Lawrence wrote The Plumed Serpent between 1923 to 1924, a time when he was in ill health, living in Mexico, and becoming dependent on his wife Frieda. The plot revolves around a movement to replace the Christian God with the old pre-conquest gods, such as Quetzalcoatl, the plumed serpent of the title.

Written in 1913, D H Lawrence's first major novel, Sons and Lovers, was the one of the earliest in the English language to explore a close-knit mining community from the inside. Lawrence's semi-autobiographical novel, set in the Nottinghamshire coal fields, is renowned for its accurate portrayal of working-class life and for its use of local dialect. It traces emotional conflicts through the protagonist, Paul Morel, and his suffocating relationships with his over possessive mother, and the women he falls in love with.

Despairing of both his marriage and his future with Helena, Siegmund returns home and takes his own life. Made of stronger stuff, Helena and Beatrice, his wife, move on.
