All the garden creatures try to help him in different ways that nearly lead to disaster. But our snail has stamina, and by accident and perseverance, he makes a wonderful discovery on his daring adventure.

Marginal gives us a picture of a way of life - that of the wandering homeless who drift from one hostel to another, sometimes across continents, sometimes within a street or two of where they were born, neither expecting nor even particularly desiring permanence in any aspect of their lives. These are the "marginal" ones of the title, who together with the staff of the institutions they pass through constitute the dramatis personae of the novel.
