يهدف هذا الكتاب إلى التعريف بأعلام الفلاسفة العرب وتصحيح الفهم الخاطئ الذي لدى الناس عن الفلسفة وموضوعاتها حيث اعتبروها مرادفًا للكلام الغامض والأقاويل المبهمة على الرغم من كونها دعامة قوية للتفكير ومقوم هام من مقومات الثقافة. يبدأ الكتاب بالتعريف بفيلسوف العرب والمسلمين: «الكندي» وهو أول من ترجم ونقل العلوم الفلسفية من اليونانية إلى العربية، كما كان له إنتاجه الفكري والفلسفي الخاص الذي استقاه من اطلاعاته المُوسعة في شتى علوم عصره.

رأى الكثير من المؤرخين أن دعوة «جمال الدين الأفغاني» إلى وَحْدة الشرق، ومُحارَبة الاستعمار ومُقاوَمته، تجعله جديرًا بألقابٍ مثل مُنقِذ الشرق، وباعث نهضته. في هذا الكتاب، يقدِّم المؤرخُ «عبد الرحمن الرافعي» سيرةً ذاتية متميزة لهذا الفيلسوف الإسلامي المستنير، بدايةً من طفولته والعصر الذي نشأ فيه، ومراحل حياته العملية بين الهند والآستانة ومصر، ذاكرًا الأحداثَ التاريخية المُواكِبة له، والحالةَ السياسية لمصر في ذلك الوقت.
