This play is well known as one of Shakespeare’s greatest comedies. Of course they are best friends but in between that friendship comes their love for the same woman. Der Autor gestaltet in Form einer Reportage einen Prozess, der vor der Seprema Corte in Rom vom 03.06.1947-10.06.1947 gegen den des Hochverrats angeklagten Grafen Giulio Riccardi stattfand. Es ist, wie es in den einführenden Worten des Gerichtsreporters heißt, ein Prozess, der alle angeht, die gezwungen sind, in einer Diktatur zu leben. Riccardi hat in seiner Amtszeit ein gefährliches Doppelspiel gespielt.

Während eines mittelalterlichen Fests wird jedoch der Buchprüfer Wilmslow ermordet aufgefunden – getötet wie einst der Heilige Sebastian. Zollinspektor Bognor und seine Ehefrau, die gerade auf der Durchreise in Herring St. George sind, versuchen gemeinsam mit Inspektor Wapping den Fall zu klären. Verdächtig ist jeder und die meisten Einwohner haben etwas zu verbergen. Vor den Bognors tun sich unerwartete Abgründe auf.
