"Meč magistra medicíny" je prvním dílem série "Kronika katů Mydlářů". Příběh proslulého kata, magistra Jana Mydláře, tu vypráví jeho syn, který po něm toto řemeslo zdědil. Historický román se odehrává v rudolfínské Praze a z jeho hrůzostrašných, tajemných a krví obestřených historií vystupuje pohnutý životní příběh magistra medicíny a kata Jana Mydláře. Příběh vypráví syn proslulého kata, který zdědil jeho neblahé řemeslo. Být katem bylo ponižující, řemesla si nikdo nevážil, katům se nedostávalo pochopení, byli celoživotními psanci.

Dobrodružný detektivní příběh se odehrává v renesanční Praze. Román vznikl podle stejnojmenné divadelní hry oblíbeného autora Vlastimila Vondrušky. Hlavními hrdiny je zdánlivě nesourodá trojice – staroměstský rychtář Jan, katovka a zběhlý student teologie. Městský kat, který se až příliš rád dívá na dno číše s vínem, se stane uprostřed noci svědkem vraždy. Pachatelem je neznámý muž v klobouku s pérem, podivnější ale je totožnost oběti – tou je kupec Pelech, který měl být před několika dny pohřben. Ještě než se stačí rychtář vydat po první stopě, dojde k další vraždám a loupeži na radnici. Naštěstí je tu rychtářův bystrý synovec Petr.

I když se situace v Uhrách v polovině 16. století již trochu uklidnila a útoky Osmanů na nějakou dobu utichly, objeví se jiná nebezpečná a zdánlivě neřešitelná záležitost. Protože použití vojska je vyloučeno a rovněž vyslanec českého krále v Budíně má v tom ohledu ruce svázané, obrátí se královna Anna na královského písaře Jiřího Adama z Dobronína. Pán z Dobronína se rozhodne její prosbě vyhovět a vydává se na tajnou misi do Uher. Ale ještě dříve, než tam stačí dorazit, dojde k první vraždě, která cestu velmi zkomplikuje.
