This play is a dramatization of Boccaccio’s story of Gillette of Narbonne. Only the comic parts were of Shakespeare’s invention; he added the characters of the pusillanimous Parolles, the lofty courtier Lafew, the Clown Lavatch, and the long suffering Countess. The story revolves around two characters, Othello and Iago. Othello is a Moorish military commander who was serving as a general of the Venetian army in defense of Cyprus against invasion by Ottoman Turks. Dieser will ihnen das Geld geben, doch als Sicherheit will er nicht etwa Zinsen, sondern ein Pfund Fleisch - und zwar von Antonio! Dessen Schiffe werden plötzlich vermisst, und nun steht es schlecht für Antonio... Shakespeares Klassiker ist noch immer ein beliebter Dauerbrenner auf den Bühnen.
