This week we will learn how to identify kosher birds, since the Torah only lists the 24 non-kosher species rather than giving positive signs. We will also learn that eggs of non-kosher birds are Biblically forbidden. The Gemara also teaches the simanim for kosher fish (fins and scales), followed by a discussion of forbidden creeping creatures including snakes, scorpions, beetles, centipedes, and their like, which are all prohibited.

This week we will continue learning about treifos, focusing on internal organs, debating whether missing or diseased kidneys render an animal a treifah, and then transitioning to the treifos unique to birds, including piercing of the kurkevan (gizzard) versus the zefek (crop). We will then learn about the simanim (identifying signs) of kosher animals, birds, locusts and fish.
