Welcome to Skeptical Thinker. A podcast where we dispel misconceptions and respect your ability to think critically about the world and everything in it! Being a skeptical thinker is so much more important today with all of the misinformation in social media. If you can't use your mind and intelligence to dig deeper into issues, you run the risk of being misled. Skepticism is all about asking questions , and being unwilling to believe without conclusive evidence. A skeptical person regularly asks themselves, "could I be wrong?"Jamie and Leah - Father and Daughter team of skepticists Science

Hi there! This week, Jamie and Leah are going into another section of the book Humankind, by Rutger Bregman. Today, we look at the Stanford Experiment, the Robber's Cave Experiment, Stanley Milgram's Shock Machine, and how all this seems to point to the fact that humans are generally bad if you break through the thin surface veneer.

Here's the bibiographical information about the book:

    Bregman, R. (2021). Humankind: A Hopeful History.

And here's some other things we referred to in the podcast this week:

    • Neff, K. D. (2011). Self-Compassion: the proven power of being kind to yourself. In Medical Entomology and Zoology. http://ci.nii.ac.jp/ncid/BB27817715

So this is a rough podcast. Jamie has some audio issues that kept cropping up and we apologize for the occasional overlapping audio - not sure how that is happening, but we record from two different locations and sometimes we get feedback. We're doing our best.

Anyway, this podcast is part one of probably three episodes that we are treating like an book-talk. The book we are reading is Human Kind. Here's a link for the book on bookshop.org. We will be continuing with the discussion of part 2 of the book and part 3 over the following weeks. Hope you enjoy, and feel free to read along - it is a good read and has helped to restore some of my optimism for the direction of our human species. Here's some links to a few things we talked about in the episode:

    Mark Rober's Wallet experiment video

The Reluctant Mr. Darwin (we talked about to books I had read about Darwin. This is the one I could remember while sitting at the library editing this episode.)

Remember to like and subscribe. We are not a super professional podcast, but the work we do is important to us and we love to share our thoughts.

Also feel free to leave us a comment. I'm pretty sure I know how to read them. :)

  • Thoughts on Nothing...

Hi! This is Jamie. Leah took this one off so that I could go down a short rabbit hole of thoughts. I am an ever evolving human that wants to be curious and creative. I think I did both on this episode. It's short, but I hope it is thought provoking. Let me know how you like it!
