Fundaya Podcast: Bridging Remote Sensing Education Across the Global South

In this Fundaya podcast episode, we introduce Professors Timo Balz (Wuhan University, China) and Walter Musakwa (University of Johannesburg, South Africa) to discuss the Fundayao initiative and their backgrounds in remote sensing. We explain the name Fundayao from “Funda” (to learn/teach in Nguni languages) and “Yao” (far/remote in Chinese, as in remote sensing), and describe Fundayao’s aim to democratize and broaden access to remote sensing education via a mobile-first, social-media approach for younger, less-privileged audiences in the Global South, supported and kickstarted by ISPRS Capacity Building Initiative funding. The project emphasizes connecting remote sensing to real-world needs at the grassroots—farmers, planners, and disaster response—while educating through podcasts and short clips, and invites audiences to follow their channels as they improve content.
