Kung Fu Parody Movies - Do You Even Binge? Ep 53

Welcome to Hollywood - Film Industry Movies - Do You Even Binge? Ep 52

This week, we’re pulling back the curtain on the industry itself to explore three films that perfectly capture the desperation, ambition, and cutthroat reality of life behind the camera. From actors and writers to high-level studio executives, these stories reveal why the fear of being replaced by "the next big thing" drives the endless cycle of reboots, remakes, and risk-aversion in Tinseltown.

    The Lineup:

The Big Picture (1989): Christopher Guest’s sharp look at a fresh film school grad who learns exactly how shallow the pursuit of fame can be once you’re inside the studio system.

The Player (1992): Robert Altman’s satirical black comedy featuring arguably the greatest collection of cameos in cinematic history, centered on a producer who will do anything to protect his position.

Swimming with Sharks (1994): The ultimate cautionary tale about the toxic power dynamic between a naive assistant and his abusive, high-powered studio boss.

    In this episode, we discuss:

The reality of the "Hollywood grind"—why studios greenlight only a fraction of the thousands of pitches they hear every year.

How The Player managed to assemble more Oscar-winning talent than any film before it, and why the cast donated their salaries to charity.

The real-life "Hollywood Hell" stories that inspired George Huang to write Swimming with Sharks after his own experiences at Sony Pictures.

The difference between the artistic integrity of the independent spirit and the crushing weight of industry demands.

Movies We Watched On The Plane - Do You Even Binge? Ep 51

We went on vacation this week and binged on the plane! This week, we are breaking down four wildly different films we caught while in flight, ranging from reality-bending indie sci-fi to chaotic, unhinged comedies and a historical biopic that left us wishing for a documentary instead.

    The Lineup:
Redux Redux: A mind-melting sci-fi thriller about a mother fracturing reality and jumping through the multiverse to track down and repeatedly execute the man who killed her daughter.

Operation Taco Gary’s: A chaotic, conspiracy-fueled comedy where an off-the-meds brother drags his sibling on a wild road trip involving squid people metropolis theories, gun-safety mishaps, and an official welcome to a very strange establishment.

Sarah’s Oil: The 2025 adaptation inspired by the incredible true story of Sarah Rector, who became one of the nation's first female African American millionaires at just eleven years old.

Balls Up: A rowdy, chaotic comedy starring Mark Wahlberg and Benjamin Bratt as corporate outcasts who accidentally tank a high stakes marketing campaign for a "unique" product, lose their jobs, and head to the World Cup anyway only to get tangled up with a dangerous cartel and a very bizarre character played by Sacha Baron Cohen.

    Join us as we discuss:
Multiverse execution loops and the brutal reality of the timeline jumps in Redux Redux.

The sheer unhinged behavior of Operation Taco Gary’s, from stealing neighbor's Wi-Fi to checking gun safety by putting a barrel in your mouth.

Lesa’s take on Sarah's Oil, how a whimsical, lighthearted tone and a fictional "white savior" wildcatter played by Zachary Levi completely ruined an incredible piece of history.

The absolute escalation of Balls Up, featuring Sacha Baron Cohen's bizarre interrogation tactics ("Yaysh or neaow?"), a forced karaoke setup, and why Mark Wahlberg always gets dragged into these situations.

David Ayer Movies - Do You Even Binge? Ep 50

    David Ayer Movies

David Ayer rebelled and got into a lot of trouble as a teenager after his dad died, eventually being kicked out of his house. After living in South Central Los Angeles and enlisting in the U.S. Navy, his experiences became the inspiration for many of his films. This week, we're breaking down his gritty depictions of LAPD life, the real-life scandals behind the scripts, and the intense lengths he went to to get these movies made.

    The Lineup:

Training Day: The 2001 classic written by Ayer that questioned if you can effectively enforce the law without being corrupt.

Harsh Times: Ayer’s directorial debut starring Christian Bale as a veteran with PTSD, funded by Ayer taking out a second mortgage on his home.

End of Watch: The 2012 film focused on two South Central LAPD partners who stumble into a dangerous crime involving human trafficking and a Mexican cartel.

    Join us as we discuss:

The Rampart Scandal, CRASH unit corruption, and the downfall of Rafael Pérez.

Denzel Washington ad-libbing his famous "King Kong" line and copying Pérez's look.

How David Ayer brought street racing culture to the first Fast & Furious and why Noel G is always named Hector.

Felipe's take on End of Watch being an extension of Harsh Times.
