The wind behind the old Granger place didn't howl. It talked.

That was the thing nobody could explain, the thing that made grown men in Bellefontaine go quiet at the gas station and find somewhere else to look. Wind is supposed toroar, or moan, or rattle a screen door. The wind off those pines did something worse. It murmured. Long, low, patient — the cadence of a voice that has all the time in the world and only one thing left to say.

Folks said the woods were alive. They didn't mean it the way the nature shows mean it, all root-networks and quiet cooperation. They meant it the old way. Alive. Breathing. Listening.

Waiting.

But you can't sell waiting to a seventeen-year-old. Eddie Marsh had a six-pack his cousin bought him, Tina Caldwell had a flashlight and zero patience for ghost stories she'd outgrown, and Ricky Boone had a knot in his stomach hecouldn't talk anybody out of. So on a thick June night when the air hung wet enough to drink, the three of them cut across the Caldwells' back field toward the half-collapsed house at the edge of the trees, and not one of them said thething they were all thinking, which was that the woods had gotten closer to the road than they remembered.
