This sermon is part three of the royal priesthood series. This sermon is about priestly blessing. As a royal priesthood, we have the power to proclaim the blessing of God and release the blessing of God over others. And this power to bless has been part of the priestly call right from the beginning

This was week two of our series on royal priesthood. In week one, we looked at priestly calling, to be set apart, to enter God's presence. Pastor William spoke on Hebrews 10 and its instruction to come into the heavenly sanctuary, to come before the throne of God. For through the tearing of the veil and the blood of Jesus, we have access, access, access. But what do we do when we get there? What do we do when we come into the presence of God as a royal priesthood? What is the first calling of a priestly church?

In this sermon we begin a new series about the royal priesthood. We're going to be looking at what it means as a church to be a royal priesthood and a holy nation. We will unpack that theme over several Sundays.

Last week Pastor William spoke about the last supper and Jesus washing the feet of his disciples. This week we look at what happened afterwards as Jesus is arrested and he's questioned by the high priest. We're going to look at three figures involved in those events. John Mark, who was a follower of Jesus, Caiaphas, who was the Jewish high priest, and Jesus himself. We're going to focus on their clothing. We're going to look at clothing for those three people, each of them wore garments that carried great symbolic significance.

We're in our Easter preaching series and this week Pastor William felt very strongly from the Lord that I was meant to talk on the footwashing where Jesus washed his disciples feet. So we're diverting into the Gospel of John this morning which records that story. In first century Judea there were established customs when it came to hospitality. Host would normally provide uh three things: water for foot washing, a kiss, and oil to be to anoint the heads of your guests.

In this sermon Pastor William speaks on passing judgement on people. Do not judge or you too will be judged. At the time of Jesus, it was the Pharisees who were known as the masters of judging others. They had exalted themselves in the land as moral judges, condemning those who could not keep up with their standards and having very little mercy for those who fell short. And no doubt Jesus had them in mind when he gave this teaching to his disciples. Yet we all at times have made personal moral judgments against others. We all judge. We can have our own internal court system where we are the judge and the jury and the executioner. And we render our verdicts against others so often in seconds with little right of reply. And we tolerate our judgments against others rather than root them out through repentance. We judge often. In fact, it's very, very hard for us not to judge. It's almost like we are wired to judge. Why are we as humans so quick to morally condemn others despite being so flawed ourselves?

Our speaker today is Jack Haye President of Patrick Henry College. He speaks on quite a few Psalms and how over the past few years and months he's thought a lot about them. The big one in this talk is Psalm 63. How he finds a lot of earthiness in them. How they represent the highs and lows that real people experience and people who come before the Lord with praise and adoration, but also with confusion and questions and sometimes even complaints. But even the ones where the psalmist starts out that way, you find somewhere toward the bottom, it normally begins to unwind a bit and them turning toward God's sovereignty. And as the writer's heart and mind are tuned more to God's power and goodness rather than the urgency of their own situation.

In this sermon Pastor William is talking about being filled with the spirit. It's a very simple talk but which he hopes has practical application. In Ephesians 5 15-20 in which Paul is advising the believers in Ephesus to be careful how they live as we heard not as unwise but as wise making the most of every opportunity for the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish but understand what the Lord's will is. Do not get drunk on wine which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the spirit. Now, sometimes as Christians, we can wrestle over that question. "What is God's will for my life?" Well, here we have an amazing clear statement of the Lord's will for our lives. The Lord's will is for each one of us to be filled with the spirit of God. That is God's will for me. That is God's will for you.
