    I’ve spoken quite a few times on this podcast about how tall women are masculinized.

    It can look like people saying they feel “so small” around you. Always asking you to carry the heavy stuff because you’re “big and strong”. Being told you’re intimidating or scary. Misgendering even.

    There are many examples of this actually happening to us, but not really the other side of things: us internalizing this and finding it weird or awkward to portray ourselves in a feminine way.

    This is a struggle that many of us tall women face.

    So we’re gonna talk a little bit about this in today’s episode and even take it a step further and talk about how when some tall women try to come across as/be feminine, they are “punished” for it. Tune in for more!

    Trying to find clothes as a tall woman is already a struggle. Mainly because it’s hard to find options, especially in-store options, that fit our long limbs.

    So what do we do?

    We take our struggles to the Internet.

    Social media and Internet forums have become a place where communities can gather and share ideas. So, when tall women are in need of recommendations and advice, they tend to hit places like Reddit, Instagram, and of course, TikTok.

    I mean, when scrolling through TikTok, you can find hidden gems, especially on the TikTok shop feature. However, there’s some fishy stuff going on with TikTok Shop. Like clothes being advertised as tall girl friendly when the person talking about them isn’t even truly tall.

    Many tall women talk about how their dates admire them and love the fact that they’re tall, while others struggle with heightfishing/men lying about being taller than they actually are, people telling them “good luck with finding a husband with that height because no man wants a woman taller than him”, and even “competing” with short women for tall men. And I use the term “compete” very loosely here.

    As tall folks, we’re often told that we’re lucky to be tall.

    “You’re so lucky to be tall.”

    “You should be grateful for your height.”

    “I would do or give anything to be as tall as you.”

    And listen, I get it, okay. There are so many amazing things that come with being tall, like having a commanding presence, seeing over crowds, maybe even having a higher earning potential. Apparently, we may be smarter, and the list goes on and on.

    However, as with anything, there are also disadvantages. Some are so bad that they may negatively affect our health, safety, and the way we view ourselves and our bodies. And sometimes we take these experiences to the Internet, sharing them in hopes of finding some sort of solidarity. And sometimes, we’re met with the opposite, saying that we should stop complaining, what we’re saying is dumb, or just straight up saying it’s not that serious.

    Finding quality clothing as a tall woman has always been a struggle.

    Yes, there are a lot more options than there were about 10, 15, 20 years ago.

    Big retailers are finally offering “tall sizes”, which was great to see, only to find out that tall to them isn’t the same as tall to us. Apparently, catering to the 5’7”, 5’8” girlies is enough, and the girlies taller than that just don’t exist. Additionally, proportions are weird; the hip and waist areas don’t fit well, and we have the TikTok Shop ‘tall girl friendly’ scams.

    So there are all these options, and yet it still feels like there’s quite literally no options for us. But that’s not entirely true. There are options for us that are good quality and long enough.

    And we all know what body type they’re talking about when comparing us to models.
