During the interview, Emily shares some of the stories and themes behind her books, the long road to publishing, how stories can help us "zoom out" and see the bigger picture, what it means to become a "light seeker," and her firm belief that there is hope and beauty in the world if we have the eyes to see it.

During the interview, Mary shares part of her own literal journey—from living in England and Canada, to learning that writers didn't have to be "old, crusty, and dead." (😂) We talk about Mary’s love for middle grade horror, the long road to publication, and how her books use scary elements to explore feelings of loneliness, grief, anger, friendship, and belonging.

Whether you’re a reader, writer, parent, teacher, or someone who enjoys a spooky story filled with meaning, I hope this episode encourages you to "find your weirdos," open a book (or pick up a pen) and embark on your *own* literal journey.

  • Finding Hope and Magic in the Gulag ✨ Cristin Williams on Russian History and The Whisper of Stars
    May 8 2026

When the world feels dark, cruel, and dehumanizing, a good story can help us hold onto hope...

In this fascinating episode of A LITERAL JOURNEY, I sit down with Cristin Williams, author of the historical fantasy novel The Whisper of Stars.

Cristin shares her own literal journey as a writer—including the years of "writing in obscurity" before her publishing her first novel. Along the way, we discuss Russian history, Stalin’s witch (!!!), writing advice, and how kindness can have a profound ripple effect for good.

Whether you’re a reader, writer, parent, teacher, or someone looking for a little light during a dark time, I hope this episode encourages you to open a book (or pick up a pen) and embark on your *own* literal journey.

    About CRISTIN WILLIAMS:

Cristin Williams is the author of historical fantasy novels for adults and kids. Her adult debut, THE WHISPER OF STARS, will be published in 2025 by Orion, under the Gollancz imprint.

Cristin was born in Japan while her parents were working as Russian-English translators for the US military. She spent her early adulthood travelling the world while working in the non-profit sector, and she now lives in Belgium with her Flemish husband and four daughters. When not writing, you'll find her studying history, photographing castles, or exploring the tangled forest of the Belgian Ardennes.

  • Revision Is Where The Magic Happens 📝 Janette Rallison (and C. J. Hill) on Writing Across Genres
    Apr 17 2026

“And remember that revisions is where the magic happens. That’s where you’re taking that … piece of coal and turning it into a diamond.” -Janette Rallison

In this thoughtful and funny episode of A LITERAL JOURNEY, I sit down with author Janette Rallison (also known as C. J. Hill). Janette explains how her daughter's experience in school was one of her primary motivations to write books for teens.

During the interview, Janette talks about writer's block, getting published, facing rejection, and what success (really) looks like. We also dive into what Janette has learned from traditional and independent publishing, and why she believes revision "is where the magic happens."

Whether you’re a reader, writer, parent, teacher, or someone who just loves a good story, I hope this episode encourages you to open a book (or pick up a pen) and embark on your *own* literal journey.

    About JANETTE RALLISON:

Janette lives in Arizona with her husband and divides her time between her children, grandchildren, writing, and wandering around the house looking for items she has misplaced. (This is how she gets most of her exercise.) She has two dogs and enough cats to classify her as “an eccentric cat lady.” She did not do this on purpose. Every single one of the felines showed up on its own and refuses to leave.

Since Janette has five children and deadlines to write books, she doesn’t have much time left over for hobbies. But since this is the internet and you can’t actually check to see if anything on this site is true, let’s just say she enjoys dancing, scuba diving, horseback riding, and long talks with Chris Hemsworth. (Well, I never said he answers back.)

  • Writing Through Chaos 📖 Joan Reardon on Critical Thinking and The Grimsbane Family Witch Hunters
    Apr 8 2026

This episode is for people who struggle creating something meaningful *especially* when life feels chaotic and uncertain...

In this delightful episode of A LITERAL JOURNEY, I sit down with award-winning author Joan Reardon to talk about her remarkable path to publication. Always a devoted reader, Joan resolved to write her own Middle Grade Novels *while simultaneously* navigating the COVID shutdowns, finishing school, moving, studying for the bar exam, getting married, and starting a career in law (holy crap!).

During the interview, Joan shares how The Grimsbane Family Witch Hunters grew out of her love of family, folklore, early American history, and cryptids (who doesn't love a good cryptid?!) and how Dad Rock Dragon Quest is a kind of "love letter" to her husband. Along the way, we talk about Percy Jackson, writing as a kind of therapy, family as the beating heart of story, and how she truly measures her success as an author.

Whether you’re a reader, writer, parent, teacher, or someone trying to finally make the thing you feel "called to create," I hope this episode encourages you to open a book (or pick up a pen) and embark on your *own* literal journey.

    About JOAN REARDON:

Joan is an award-winning author and attorney from Youngstown, Ohio. When Covid cut Joan's senior year of college short, Joan thought she'd give writing children's books a chance. Six years later, and Joan has two novels published with Simon & Schuster's Aladdin imprint: Dad Rock Dragon Quest (2025) and The Grimsbane Family Witch Hunters (2024).

  • Write What Fascinates You 📚 Stuart Gibbs on Spy School, FunJungle, and Writing An Adventurous Life
    Mar 20 2026

Most writers are told to “write what you know.” Stuart Gibbs encourages authors to write what fascinates them...

In this fascinating episode of A LITERAL JOURNEY, I sit down with bestselling author Stuart Gibbs—the author behind Spy School, FunJungle, Charlie Thorne, Once Upon A Tim, and The Last Musketeer series. Stuart shares his incredible journey from writing stories as a child (showcasing his first, "homemade" book), to working in Hollywood (Anastasia, anyone??), to becoming an author of more than 40 books.

Along the way, we talk about his real-life adventures: cage diving with great white sharks, facing down a charging elephant, and rescuing children from drowning, and how his experiences and real-life adventures have influenced his stories.

Stuart chats about persistence, and why success in publishing is often a slow, steady climb—not a single breakthrough moment. He also shares one of the most powerful pieces of writing advice I’ve ever heard: don’t write what you know… write what fascinates you.

Whether you’re a reader, writer, parent, teacher, or an adventurer, I hope this episode encourages you to open a book (or pick up a pen) and embark on your own literal journey.

    About STUART GIBBS:

A few interesting things that Stuart Gibbs has done: Worked at a zoo. Researched capybaras (the world's largest rodents). Climbed Mount Kilimanjaro. Cage dived with great white sharks. Faced down a charging elephant. Swum with penguins in the Galapagos. Ice-climbed a glacier in Patagonia. Visited the cockpit of the Space Shuttle Atlantis. Helped rescue sixteen children from drowning off the coast of Israel. Written a few movies that actually got made (See Spot Run; Repli-Kate; Showdown). Worked on a few animated movies (Anastasia; Open Season 3; Mickey, Donald, Goofy: The Three Musketeers).

He is currently at work on several more books -- and the screenplay for Spy School the movie/series.

  • Creating Magical and Mysterious Worlds 📚 Ben Guterson on Reading, Writing & the Winterhouse Series
    Mar 13 2026

The best stories begin with a little bit of mystery...

In this episode of A LITERAL JOURNEY (easily one of my favorites 🤫), I sit down with Ben Guterson, author of the bestselling Winterhouse trilogy, The World-Famous Nine, and The Einstein's of Vista Point. We talk about Ben's journey into writing, his interest in puzzles and wordplay, and his love of creating mystery-filled adventures for young readers.

Ben reflects on the books that shaped him growing up (from Roald Dahl to The House With A Clock In It's Walls), his departure from the corporate world and into the world of writing fiction, and the creative process behind building his mysterious and magical worlds. In regards to Middle Grade Fiction, Ben also talks about why the ages between 8-12 seem to be such an important time for readers: because kids at that age are beginning to discover their own place (their own story) in whatever setting they find themselves.

Whether you’re a reader, writer, parent, teacher, or someone who just loves a good mystery (with plenty of wordplay and puzzles), I hope this episode encourages you to open a book (or pick up a pen) and embark on your own literal journey.

    About BEN GUTERSON:

Ben Guterson is the New York Times bestselling author of The World-Famous Nine, which was a Barnes & Noble Young Reader Pick of the Month, as well as The Einsteins of Vista Point and the popular Winterhouse trilogy. • Telling Stories from History 📚 Heather B. Moore on Writing and The Paper Daughters of Chinatown
    Mar 9 2026

How does a bestselling author turn history into unforgettable novels?

In this fascinating episode of A LITERAL JOURNEY, I sit down with USA Today bestselling author Heather B. Moore—a PROLIFIC, inspirational writer whose work spans several genres.

Heather shares the story behind her writing career: from her lifelong love of reading, to her discovery that yes, even people from UTAH can become authors (!!!), and her subsequent journey of building a catalog of more than 90 publications. We also talk about "the war of art," the discipline required to write consistently, the ups and downs of researching historical fiction, and the challenge of bringing real (sometimes emotionally heavy) stories to print.

Along the way we talk about several of Heather’s books, including: "The Paper Daughters of Chinatown," a powerful story about a mission home that rescued trafficked Chinese girls in 19th-century San Francisco, as well as her recent novel "Julia," a novel about famed Julia Child and her surprising wartime service with the OSS.

Whether you’re a reader, writer, parent, teacher, or someone who just loves a good historical story, I hope this episode encourages you to open a book (or pick up a pen) and embark on your own literal journey.

    About HEATHER B. MOORE:

Heather B. Moore is a USA Today bestselling author of more than ninety publications. Heather writes primarily historical and #herstory fiction about the humanity and heroism of the everyday person.
