This is a beautifully written story of survival in the American slave era. Be prepared for brutal images of the treatment and degradation of black slaves. But this powerful story with strong female character has a seem of hope, courage and survival running through its core. I really found depth in the story and would highly recommend it.

Enjoyed the storyline, it brings home just how brutal life was to slaves, disturbing and sad, inside was the story of resilience, and strengh, narration was just right and believable. Worth reading

What a compelling book about the slave trail. It is both powerful and emotional in its prose and testifies to how the human spirit can survive the harrowing times that were endured.

I have recently read The Kitchen House and Glory over Everything, and saw this as a recommendation to read as a similar genre.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it is sad and heartbreaking at times, but this is what makes it such a great story, the highs and lows and the struggle that the people faced in those times. I would highly recommend!
