About this listen

Wuthering Heights is Emily Brontë's only novel. It was first published in 1847 under the pseudonym Ellis Bell, and a posthumous second edition was edited by her sister Charlotte. The name of the novel comes from the Yorkshire manor on the moors on which the story centres (as an adjective, wuthering is a Yorkshire word referring to turbulent weather). The narrative tells the tale of the all-encompassing and passionate, yet thwarted, love between Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw, and how this unresolved passion eventually destroys them and many around them.

The announcement for the next chapter almost cut short the last sentence with no pause.

Likewise with the end of the book. Harry Potter started almost before it had finished

the story of wuthering heights has been reviewed thousands of times so I won't add my thoughts on that aspect. However, because this is an audio book of the original it includes words & phrases in dialects of the time. This narrator attempts to read them in received English rather than a Yorkshire accent, making them sound both ridiculous and mispronounced. Furthermore, even when accents aren't required she adds spaces and pauses where there clearly shouldn't be any making the story stilted. In fact it was so bad I couldn't get beyond halfway. I do not recommend this version - instead try the audio version narrated by Juliet Stevenson.
