Critic reviews

The super spy is back, with a fresh injection from novelist and screenwriter extraordinaire, Anthony Horowitz. The expert in suspense takes us back to the beginning of James Bond’s story… the story rips along with plenty of familiar Bond staples: evil villains, fast cars and women falling for young Bond’s charms. Ian Fleming would be proud.
Daring, exciting, and also superbly plotted, it shows Bond questioning his loyalties at the end of his career. It marks a fitting end to a trilogy from Horowitz that Fleming would surely have approved of (Jon Coates)
In many ways, Horowitz has now surpassed Fleming and the final book in his Bond trilogy is a masterpiece. It's a literary thriller writing at its page-turning finest.'
Horowitz is a worthy successor to Ian Fleming, putting 007 back in his true domain… This New Bond is up there with the better Old Bonds… The denouement is a very fine piece of action writing… Horowitz has done splendidly.
A novel that feels very like a filmfast-paced, skilfully writtenleaves you wanting more, and for serious Bond junkies [it] is the next fix in a long tale of addiction.
Even better than Trigger Mortisit is tremendous fun. Anthony Horowitz has the discipline and skill of a first-class action writer.
Anthony Horowitz's second James Bond book will keep 007 obsessives happy with martinis, beautiful women and an enormously fat Corsican gangster.
Exciting high drama… Horowitz stays loyal to the fabulous Fleming formula. And for that he surely deserves another mission guiding the fortunes of the world’s favourite superspy.

I really felt that Horowitz found Fleming's voice in this story. Polished and as well researched as ever. Very much in Horowitz's own style, the ending leaves open the opportunity of a sequel or allows this to be the last Horowitz Bond book.

I really enjoy AH taking on the role of James Bond author. This is his third book & each has been excellent. It reads like a Fleming book, keeps your attention & wanting to start the next chapter!
Really enjoyed. Well read by Rory Kinnear, nice to get one of the James Bond movie actors to do the audio book.

Anthony Horowitz has done it again!

This is just what you expect - brilliant narration, entertaining slightly silly story. Horowitz is a better writer than Fleming and it shows

Even better than the original

WHAT happens when 007 finds himself playing the role of his life behind the Iron Curtain? In With a Mind to Kill, Horowitz takes Ian Fleming's legacy one step further with another well-paced James Bond adventure.
Set in 1964, just two weeks after the end of Fleming's last full Bond novel, The Man with the Golden Gun (in which 007 killed Francisco "Pistols" Scaramanga) we see a weary Bond ordered to cut his Jamaican R&R short for a very special mission.
Horowitz doesn't attempt to re-invent the wheel but, rather, gives it a hefty push to achieve good momentum. He knows how to emulate Fleming's flare for detail while remaining slavishly faithful to the James Bond canon. We are told, for instance, that the Bond we encounter here is almost spent, having already collected the figurative scalps of Le Chiffre, Mr Big, Hugo Drax, Rosa Klebb and Dr No.
While the story (which also doffs its hat to Len Deighton) does contain a few surprises, it remains reassuringly ensconced in a world where Bond is the classic Cold Warrior; protagonists carry scars - emotional or physical - from the Second World War, knives, pistols, and sniper rifles are still the weapons of choice and life-or-death outcomes carry equal odds.
Special mention must be given to Rory Kinnear, whose excellent acting and delivery brings it all home in superlative fashion.
All told, a riveting listen.

A must-read for any true James Bond fan

This was the most thrilling read I've had in a long time. A classically constructed Bond story spiked with historical details and an extra helping of Craig-era visceral brutality, superbly narrated. Very enjoyable!
