Nina can never forgive Maggie for what she did. And she can never let her leave.

They say every house has its secrets, and the house that Maggie and Nina have shared for so long is no different. Except that these secrets are not buried in the past.

Every other night, Maggie and Nina have dinner together. When they are finished, Nina helps Maggie back to her room in the attic, and into the heavy chain that keeps her there. Because Maggie has done things to Nina that can’t ever be forgiven, and now she is paying the price.

But there are many things about the past that Nina doesn’t know, and Maggie is going to keep it that way—even if it kills her.

Because in this house, the truth is more dangerous than lies.

"[Marrs'] most sinister novel to date."—Daily Express

"An excellent psychological thriller. A one-sitting read about a daughter who keeps her mother locked in the attic. Twisty, moving, and chilling."—Sarah Pinborough, bestselling author of Behind Her Eyes

"A tense, thrilling read—I found it impossible to put down. It’s dark and twisted, and I loved it."—Alex Michaelides, bestselling author of The Silent Patient

I love John Marrs's books and I've listened to all of them, my absolute favourite being The One which is easily on list of top 5 audiobooks. I don't wish to be unkind and I hope this comes across as constructive criticism, but Elizabeth Knowledon's reading really irritates me. She has a lovely voice, carries the story well, but her habit of being over dramatic in each sentence really throws it off. In a perfectly ordinary sentence she puts such dramatic emphasis on certain words and it bugs the hell out of me. like on a comedy show if someone is reading a dramatic poem and it just sounds wrong. Maggie WALKED up the DARK steps WONDERING if she should SAY something. Every single sentence. Admittedly, she did stop doing this around half way through the book so maybe one of the producers asked her to tone it down. Other than that, shes a brilliant narrator, and the narrator of a book is such a huge part of the experience- I almost returned the book but I'm glad I didn't because it did get much better.

The story is brilliant, John Marrs is brilliant at bringing each interwoven story together with characters you couldn't put together until he reveals why, and how.

It's a great book and done really well if you can ignore the dramatics in the first half, again I'm not trying to be unkind about the narrator, she really has a lovely voice and reads beautifully, it's just a habit I can't ignore.

A great story and easy to follow.. but...

An absolutely superb psychological thriller by John Marrs. I read somewhere that this was going to be turned into a film. Well if so - even though I know what happens - I can’t wait!

The story of Nina and her mother Maggie is a must. I don’t want to write too much as I don’t want to spoil anything.

There are so many twists in this novel but it’s very easy to follow.

You must read this book if you like the genre or John Marrs. Highly recommend.

Oh my goodness! Brilliantly written, full of suspense and twists and the narrator is excellent.. definitely up for my best book award. Love the writing of John Marrs and have enjoyed others from him too..but with this one, don’t expect sunshine as it’s full of the dark side of the moon. Superb

Excellent narration of a well thought through story with a fitting ending. Best I’ve listened to for a long while.

A gripping listen

Incredible performance by narrator!! Whole heartedly believed I was listening to two different women speaking at some points. Slow start but once the secrets start to come out from both characters, the pace picks up fast and I didn’t want to stop listening. The writing is pretty incredible, I was heartbroken at many times through out, then I was angry and then mind blown. I had no idea what character to believe and support and was on both sides of the fence until the last few chapters when the mind f***ery begins. Highly recommend if you like dark psychological thrillers with lots of twists. LOVED IT :))
