Having the author read her own book and read it so well, was a real bonus on what is already a wonderful book. Again I learnt so much from Ms Kingsolver. Her talent is to tell a gripping story about characters you come to really care for while giving you nuggets of facts along the way. Of course her books have a political bias but to me that is a plus.

There is a surprising joy in hearing a story told with the particular nuances and tones in which the story unfolded from the authors pen. Barbara Kingsolver is a masterful storyteller, she allows her characters to tell their own story in how their deepest emotions, joys and turmoil , beautifully unfold the story. The author artfully manages the transitions between families living in two different centuries. The house in which both families live and have almost inadvertently ‘landed’, provides a rich pallet of nuance and familiarity. A highly recommended read!

I always look forward to a Barbara Kingsolver book. I think I’ve read all of them - each one so different from its siblings - and they always live up to expectations. This is the first of her books that I have listened to - and it is read by her too. That was a true bonus. Her reading was so enjoyable- had me laughing out loud quite a few times- and I think I’ll have to get the book too. Deftly switching from one generation to another, back and forth, with a story for each family that I couldn’t wait to get back to. I know I’ll hear her voice while I read it.

Barbara Kingsolver is a really accomplished author; she’s constructed intricate parallel stories that are linked and reflect each other. She recognises historical contexts and uses her characters to debate the issues of the time; she explores relationships and can write w sensitivity.
This is good writing and great entertainment. Kingsolver narrates the text well enough herself but I occasionally become confused between the male and female voices.. not too much of an issue.
