*THE NUMBER ONE BESTSELLER*

The deliciously dark new suspense novel from the international bestselling author of Strange Sally Diamond

If my sister hadn’t been beautiful, none of it would have happened.

Ruby Cooper and her sister, Erin, live an idyllic life in their close-knit church community in Boston. But when Ruby is sixteen, she is involved in an incident that causes her family’s world to implode.

Across decades, the fallout leaves a wake of destruction behind Ruby in Dublin and Erin in Boston.

Not that Ruby wants to think about the past.

But it can’t stay a secret forever.

Critic reviews

Dark, fearless and compelling - in other words, classic Liz Nugent. Utterly distinctive and unique, this is another unforgettable work from an outstanding and brilliant crime writer.
I couldn't stop reading! Absolutely a triumph!
An absolute belter of a book ... Liz Nugent at her dark and twisty best (Louise Kennedy)
Absolutely gripping. Another utterly compelling, dark and unsettling piece of work that’s going to give me a book hangover for weeks.
What a read! A brilliantly dark and tangled web that every reader will be completely ensnared by. (Graham Norton)
Only Liz Nugent could have written this book ... an unflinching, darkly funny, sometimes disconcerting and always gripping story (Sinéad Crowley)
Liz Nugent is fearless in the places she will go to uncover our basest, darkest impulses. Ruby Cooper is her most morally complex character yet. Utterly compelling. (Tammy Cohen)
An utterly gripping story about how one incident reverberates across time, damaging and destroying lives. I read it as if in a fever (Shari Lapena)
Utterly compelling and brilliantly imagined … all the way to the last dark twist. (Anthony Horowitz)
Addictive and awe-inspiring, from the first page to the last. (Diane Jeffrey)

Another great book that had me hooked. It needs a trigger warning if sensitive to the subject matter. I knocked one star off as I felt it lost momentum when another character was introduced at midway-ish point. I also thought the editing was poor, a line repeated that should have been picked up. I won’t say the line here, and will make up something very random instead: imagine hearing ‘he loved chocolate cake’ 3 times across different chapters. Think the editor skimmed the last third of the book!

Powerful, thought provoking, superbly written, Liz Nugent has done it again - I’m already looking forwards to her next book

Uncomfortably addictive

Such a sad sad story how one lie affected so many people in such devastating ways.
Expertly written and narrated but I would not recommend it to anyone who’s borderline depressive.

Rather depressing

I loved the book, despised the main character, disliked the accents, pick one or the other but listened none stop. An excellent read.

Shocking and enthralling

Gripping tale of regrets and young mistakes that perpetuate the lives of adults. Good character depth and perspectives. Would recommend!

Gripping from start to finish!
