About this listen

From the author of the acclaimed Reed Ferguson mystery series!

Reed Ferguson returns in another mystery set in the world of professional baseball.

When Charlie Preston, second baseman for the Colorado Rockies, is suspected of murdering his best friend, Pete Westhaven, he turns to Denver private investigator Reed Ferguson for help. Reed believes in Charlie’s innocence, so he takes the case. But as Reed digs into the murder victim’s past, he quickly finds himself ensnared in the clandestine underworld of illegal steroids. As the lists of suspects grows, Reed battles not only to solve the crime, but also to save the person he loves most.

All of Reed’s pals are back in this humorous tale with a clever homage to film noir. Great for fans who love a fast-paced, humorous listen, without a lot of swearing or sex.

This is the 9th book in the Reed Ferguson mystery series. I have really enjoyed this series so far and this installment does not disappoint. In this book, Reed is approached by a local professional baseball player who asks Reed to help find evidence to prove his innocence in the murder of his best friend. Reed quickly becomes embroiled in a larger mystery with a target on his own back.

As usual, this story has Pawlish’s trademark film noir style and references. Reed’s cast of characters including the Goofball brothers are roped into the mystery as well.

Johnny Peppers does his usual bang up job of narrating this story. I really enjoy listening to him and his voice fits this genre perfectly.

This story can stand alone but it is made more enjoyable by following the series and seeing how Reed and his friends grow. If you like a good mystery with a film noir feel, this is the series for you!
