I wasn't sure if I would enjoy this but I did, and it brought to life parts of the Bible that never grabbed my attention. It helped get a picture what was going on, where and when and how Hosea was related in the timeline. Obviously there is a lot of imagination, but I found it entertaining and thought provoking. What a life these prophets must have had. I do like Adam Verner's narration and I do look for recordings he does, I find him very easy on the ears, unlike many of the female narrators which tend to whine and grate on my nerves.

I've been listening to several Francine Rivers books lately and this was the latest one. I think fleshing out Bible stories to make them more understandable and relatable is an excellent idea. However, I found this one a little disappointing. It's a pretty frustrating story overall - God calls Amos the faithful shepherd to go and prophesy to the wayward tribes of Israel, to turn them away from wickedness and back to God. Filled with God's spirit, Amos tries for 10 years to do God's bidding. He's unsuccessful, nobody listens to him, and he's ultimately murdered. So it's not a very rewarding or satisfying story! The narrator however is excellent; the only issue I had with his diction was that he pronounced Amos "Amus".

The tone of the story is actually pretty sanctimonious, especially towards the end, which gets a little bit wearing. It's like listening to a vicar preaching a sermon, with every chapter having little homilies, lessons to be learnt and symbolic meanings about shepherds with their sheep. Very much overemphasizing God's father heart for his lost sheep. As a Christian, I like a good sermon as much as the next person, but overall this has made me a little less eager to pursue Francine Rivers' books in the future....
