Summary

The Pocket Learner is an educational system that the author developed to help her child with special educational needs. The system became an international multi-award-winning innovation, and has been extended to families across the globe to help their children build vocabulary, learn to read, and count. The author realized that several factors needed to be in place for her child to thrive in contemporary society.

First, she had to learn the hard way, battling every step of the way to access resources, therapies, and care support for her child. In addition, she had to find ways to engage her child in the home. This led her to develop the Special Education Advancement Toolkit: an inspirational, educational model and guide for parents of children struggling in their early years, or who have been diagnosed with special educational needs. It incorporates The Pocket Learner as the main resource in the toolkit.

The structure is built on six principles represented by the acronyms hope, faith, gentle(ness), joy, love, and peace. The framework revolves around the child: the star, fruit of the womb endowed with innate abilities and gifts. The toolkit covers the range of roles, responsibilities, and activities that families and other relevant parties must implement.

The program consists of six P's:

  • Perception: The journey into HOPE technique.
  • Preparation: The accelerated FAITH roadmap.
  • Participation: The GENTLE approach solution.
  • Progress: The JOY generator toolkit.
  • Patience: The LOVE game strategy.
  • Potential: The PEACE promotion formula.

Zig Ziglar said, “When you put faith, hope, and love together, you can raise positive kids in a negative world.” When you add gentleness, joy, and peace, you raise a balanced, confident child armed with the mindset, skills, and competencies to take their appropriate place in society.

Where was this book when my son was young? This book covers everything you could possibly wonder about as a special child’s parent. And the author is so uplifting as she encourages us to move forward and not only learn what is available, but be our child’s advocate in getting services needed. She also includes a PDF copy with the audiobook. I would have that copy so dog eared and color coded as each new circumstance arises. Cant say enough good about this book. This book is a calming and kind explanation of how to guide and care for a child with special needs. It is narrated in a way that gently understands the struggles of the systems that might have failed parents up to this point, and empathises with their position in guiding children through life. It was a lovely angle to look at the joy of caregiving and the a toolkit to evaluate and celebrate the successes on the journey in the 4th Chapter, and this is something I am sure is frequently overlooked. A positive and kind guide!

"Only a parent truly knows how it feels when everyone else is asleep but your mind and heart are racing because you are up late yet again…" I felt this deep in my bones because it is so true that there is no way to possibly explain how isolating it can be. As the parent of a daughter with autism & ADHD, I found so many aspects of this book validating. This toolkit contains a well-developed system that can be used for all facets of raising a special needs child. The discussion around time management really resonated with me - as the parent of two children, making sure that my focus is given to each child has always been a concern of mine. I appreciated the accompanying PDF - such a great resource to use when I want to revisit a topic in the book. Overall this book is well-written, detailed and a joy to listen to and use. Highly recommend!
