I thought I knew a lot about Japan’s history but it seems not enough to really follow or understand this story. I think this is one which is best read rather than listened to.

It does give the feeling of suspicion and paranoia which must always follow the overthrow of a regime. The story was quite bewildering at times, there didn’t seem to be any plot and at times it wasn’t clear what kind of tale it intended to be.

If you persevere all becomes clear in the last half hour and makes more sense.

I will now read more about the upheavals after the Meiji revolution.
