Summary

Johannes is a free dog, a fast dog – such a fast dog! Ethan Hawke reads this engaging tale superbly and brings not only the characterization alive but also the abundant humour and nuance. The narrative covers important themes – free will, diversity, loneliness, insularity, death, friendship. The fact that a mixed race protagonist lives in fear of discovery by authorities who will doubtless deport him holds its own resonance for today’s readership. A wonderful allegory to include in your list to get through in the remaining months of the National Year of Reading.
