1635, Aberdeen. A girl lies dead in a frozen garden. A young man goes missing after a drunken brawl and a sinister cloaked figure watches from the shadows . . .

The missing student, son of a Highland chief, is one of Alexander Seaton's pupils. When the young man's companion turns up bruised and bloodied, suspicion mounts that he has murdered his friend. But Alexander is convinced that there's another explanation.

Drawn ever deeper into the mystery, Alexander realises that the man in the shadows is known to him and that the strange events in the town are linked to his own past.

A gripping historical thriller from the bestselling author of The Bookseller of Inverness. Perfect for fans of Rory Clements and S. J. Parris.

Crawford Logan is an excellent narrator. It's for this reason I listen to this series of books.

Alexanders disloyalty to his wife and his judgement of his fellow characters!!

Crawford Logan’s narration is perfect for this series of four brilliant novels of Alexander Seaton.

A complex tale of love, guilt, redemption and loss against a background of religious war, turmoil and suspicion.

I love everything by SG MacLean. The characters are complex and interesting and the historical detail is wonderful

wonderful historical story

First to say is this is a spectacular listen, performed with exceptional fidelity to the text and characters by Crawford Logan. Second to say, is that I came to this novel after several months of listening to the other three in a spaced manner; never reading consecutively. I think this reduced the impact and power of these wonderful creations for me. This is the only time in my listening to several series of novels where spacing out my listening worked against me. Shona MacLean is a gifted author and historian, and she crafts her novels with what can only be loving care. I was quite wrecked by the end of this novel by events and the power of the telling. It is not for here to suggest what happens, only to say that the main character has a wonderful depth and his tussles constantly leads the listener to follow with genuine anticipation how each tussle will resolve or not. The recording is as fine as Crawford Logan's intelligent performance. And with this novel, I have to wait for whatever Shona MacLean publishes next. May it be soon.

What a Conclusion to the Four Novels!
