Summary
A dark fantasy romance perfect for fans of Raven Kennedy, Krista Street, and Sarah J. Maas.
Desperate to escape marrying a brutal king, I make a deal with a Fae Prince...
I can spin gold, I lie.
With my life at stake, I have no other choice.
I get one chance to turn my lie into truth, and I'm shocked when I succeed.
But now the cruel human king demands I become his wifepassing between his bed and being locked away in a tower, spinning gold until my last breath.
My only way out is to summon him.
A brutal Fae prince.
The deal we strike is sickening, but it's the only way I'll live after I'm caught escaping.
My new captor drags me back to his realm.
A place of profound beauty and savage cruelties.
As wicked fairies play sadistic games, the prince is my sole protector.
He's not just protecting me, though. He's guarding his own secrets.
I should hate him. But our pact shows me a side his court never sees.
There is more behind his monstrous mask.
I can't stop myself from looking.
Especially when I learn what he really wants with me.
The Court that Bleeds Gold is the first book in a dark fantasy romance trilogy. This enemies to lovers series has shades of Rumpelstiltskin and Beauty and the Beast, with a dark hero who will absolutely burn this damned world to the ground for our sharp-tongued heroine. Expect steam, violence and plenty of barbed exchanges.

The Court that Bleeds Gold is the first book in The Gold Weaver series. Zara Storm is a new author to me. This book grabbed a hold of me from the very beginning. Eleanor is a human woman that is just trying to provide for herself and her father. Her poor father has not been the same since her mother's passing. Her mother was just starting to experiment with the Art of Alchemy. Eleanor has been using her mother's journals and tools to try and perfect her mother's work. Eleanor is on the verge of making Gold. One day she shows a friend her progress. That friend gets caught stealing from the king. He tells the king that Eleanor can make the King as much Gold as he wants. The King takes Eleanor to his palace and is going to force Eleanor to marry him. Eleanor has only one last chance to escape the King. She calls upon a Fae prince to bargain her freedom with. Ruskin is the Seely Fae Prince. He is known in the human realm for his bargains and trades. He is also known for being a bit savage and unkind. Eleanor bargained for her freedom from the King in return to help Ruskin with one task. However, the one task is not an easy one. This is a slow burn, enemies to lovers, dark fantasy romance. I really enjoyed this book! Can't wait for the next book.
Ash Kingsley is a new narrator to me as well. She did an absolutely amazing job narrating this book. I can't wait to listen to more books narrated by her.

The Court that Bleeds Gold is a fae x human world that explores alchemy and metallurgy instead of the more common fae magic. However, I wanted more exploration of this unique aspect, as it takes a backseat in this novel.
🌍World building, Writing, and Pacing:
This was an easy to read and listen to book that I finished in one sitting. I did enjoy the plot and the characters but it just seemed not to be able to capture me. The pacing is sometimes a bit off, especially in the beginning, with events unfolding rapidly and hindering my ability to fully sympathize with Eleanor.
If you are new to dark fantasy then this is a good place to start because it wasn't very dark at all, towards the end there it did finally become dark-ish but it was a simple dark grey shade.
💯Would I re-read or Recommend?
No i wouldn't re-read, and i would possibly recommend to the right reader but I wouldn't openly share this one.
🪧Final thoughts:
There were a lot of elements I liked but it felt a little rushed in parts such as the pre-deal part of the book which was over really quickly. There were a great many side characters which were well written but I expected there to be a little more depth and detail on some of them.

My Rating Systems:
⭐️ DNF
⭐️⭐️
I managed to finish it but it was rubbish. I won't keep a physical copy and won't recommend it, but it's a shame as the plot could have made a good book in another authors hands
⭐️⭐️.5
It was OK. I wish i didn't start this one as It didn't do it for me as I struggled to read it. It had an interesting premise that fell flat but I had to see what happened in the end.
⭐️⭐️⭐️
I don't regret reading it, and I will read the next one, but this one did have a few flaws. [These could be repetative writing, gaps or plot holes, better character growth or world building, areas needing more detail]
Generally, the book lacked depth and became confusing. The plot resonated with me even though it annoyed me on the whole.
⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
I'm glad I read it. I enjoyed it and would recommend it to the right people but I wanted more! Sadly, it's easily forgettable with a few issues I just couldn't overlook/get past.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Good book! I loved it, but... I needed more! I really did enjoy it, but it had a few parts that needed more detail or added history/background or lore. But that's because the story or characters were memorable, and the plot was strong with brilliant twists. I would re-read if I needed to catch up for the next book and would recommend.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
Great book! I truly wish the story had been thought about more, or the author had been given more time as this book is so close to brilliance! I will likely read again and will definitely be recommending to all!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
WOW! Absolutely amazing book! Well written with great characters and a plot so memorable that it will stay with me. I will definitely read this again, I will be recommending it and sharing it with the whole world! Also- I NEED A PHYSICAL COPY!
🔥⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🔥
This is my God level tier. The book must be perfectly memorable, even after reading 50+ more books, I will remember character names and emotions along with the plot. If there is a special edition, then I need to own it! If there is a conversation on books- I'm talking about this!
🌶️– segsual language and a little on-page action
🌶️🌶️– a lot of segsual language and some on-page open door action, may be occurring a couple of times
🌶️🌶️🌶️– a lot of explicit action and dirty talk, occurring frequently with 2/3 lurvers
🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ – super graphic and explicit, occurring 4 or more times, can be more grey and taboo themed.
🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ – Kinks and Fet!shism, explicit and super graphic. It is likely to be tushy play, toys, play rooms, and more darker / taboo fantasies and realities.
not for lovers of dark fantasy, good for beginners.

I can't begin to describe how much I love this book. It has everything I want in a dark fantasy/romantasy story: enemies to lovers; slow-burn romance; damsel-in-distress; morally grey hero ... I could go on and on.
I fell in love with Ruskin, Eleanor, Destan and Halima. Ms Storm is a master at characterisation.
Thoroughly enjoyed the first book in this new series, and if I could give it more than 5 stars I would.
As far as the audiobook is concerned, I enjoyed hearing the story again, but it took me a while to get used to the voice actor's way of speaking, and I found the stilted sentences a bit jarring at first.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Narration was excellent.
Warning: this is book one in a trilogy and ends on a medium sized cliffhanger
