Summary

Ditching the stuffy hang-ups and benighted sexual traditionalism of the past is an unambiguously positive thing. The sexual revolution has liberated us to enjoy a heady mixture of erotic freedom and personal autonomy. Right?

Wrong, argues Louise Perry in her provocative new book. Although it would be neither possible nor desirable to turn the clock back to a world of pre-60s sexual mores, she argues that the amoral libertinism and callous disenchantment of liberal feminism and our contemporary hypersexualised culture represent more loss than gain. The main winners from a world of rough sex, hook-up culture, and ubiquitous porn–where anything goes and only consent matters–are a tiny minority of high-status men, not the women forced to accommodate the excesses of male lust. While dispensing sage advice to the generations paying the price for these excesses, she makes a passionate case for a new sexual culture built around dignity, virtue, and restraint.

This counter-cultural polemic from one of the most exciting young voices in contemporary feminism should be listened to by all men and women uneasy about the mindless orthodoxies of our ultra-liberal era.

I barely had the patience until the book was released
The book is rather good, covers a wide range of topics, although at times seemed very one-dimensional but that's subjective and due to one's lack of proper and deep understanding of the subject

One thing I'd like to highlight is my dislike of the unfair (and impartial) ease with which derogatory terms, such as "worthless" is used to describe men, and how readily speakers give advice or rather instructions of how-to (in the era of not shaming anyone and woke society), while being extra subtle and attentive, I'd say almost scared, when describing a woman's position

While I deeply appreciate (as in; understand) the negative role men played in the mistreatment of women along the years, we truly cannot put such categorical blame on men and label them as villains, in our times, in a very black-on-white manner while all-out remove accountability from women

We shouldn't turn a blind-eye and deny the changes that accompanied women's behaviour/place in society in the last decades since the feminist revolution
This particular pattern must be interpreted and compared if we're genuinely and compassionately scientifically neutral

All in all a very good book, a must read, I highly recommend it!

A must read!

Full of uncomfortable truths but an absolutely essential read. I only wish I'd read it 20 years ago and saved myself from the misery of toxic hook-up culture.

A must-read for every woman

A great listen/read.

Louise delivers a balanced and realist perspective on the differences between the sexes, how these differences have manifested in culture and offers a fantastic critic against a current liberal perspective.

As a guy hearing this. I finally feel that she is beginning to build a new ‘not so one sided’ or casually misandrous feminism.

As a former fuck boy hearing this, listening to Louise and her podcast has inspired change and a break away from a misleading casual dating culture that I feel was never going to lead me to the next love of my life.

As a single guy listening to this. I just wish I had heard it all before ending my relationship with my ex. 🤦🏻

Please continue your work Louise.
Your perspective draws from many sections of the political continuum, making it accessible to soo many of us trying to form opinions and navigate our way through divisive cutlural topics.

I look forward to re-reading this when having kids 🤞🤭

My first Audible listen and one of the reasons I decided to get the app.

Informative, factual, and realistic.

I enjoyed this book. There's lots to think about in her thesis. It is useful to think about the disadvantages of the current social situation. Don't dismiss the harm in something because it addresses a particular problem.

Thought provoking

very engaging listen. Perry is undoubtedly brave in taking on liberal feminism which torches anything that opposes it. her analysis is much needed.

fascinating
