About this listen

A laugh-out-loud, against-all-odds triumph of a story: the funniest debut of 2021.

Billy Plimpton is an 11-year-old boy with a big dream. He wants to be a stand-up comedian when he grows up: delivering pinpoint punch-lines and having audiences hang on his every hilarious word. A tough career for anyone, but surely impossible for Billy, who has a stammer. How will he find his voice, if his voice won't let him speak?

The idea for this story came from Helen Rutter's son, who has a stammer: she wanted to write the book that he would love to read, starring a child like him.

Such a lovely story and fantastic to explain stammering, bullying and wary teenage-hood to kids. I enjoyed it as much as my children (aged 11 and 9).

Lovely story and great message behind it

It was exiting sad and adventurous and when billy went to team play and played the drums I was sad because I really wanted to see him practicing as a drummer but when he went up on stage I felt really relieved and I didn’t want it to end overall it was one of the best books I’ve ever read or listened to
