Book witches live by a strict code: Real people belong in the real word; fictional characters belong in works of fiction.... Do not eat, drink, or sleep inside a fictional world, lest you become part of the story. Falling in love with a fictional character? Don't even think about it.
Except Rainy has fallen hard for the Duke of Chicago, the dashing British detective who stars in her favorite noir series. After their illicit romance is exposed, Rainy is forbidden from ever seeing her fictional lover again, lest she be expelled from her book coven-and forced to give up the magical gifts that are as much a part of her as her own name.
When a priceless book is stolen from her home, there's only one person she trusts to help her get it back: the Duke. Thus their shared quest begins through the worlds of Alice in Wonderland, The Great Gatsby, and other classics that will reveal hidden enemies and long-buried family secrets.©2026 8th Circle, LLC (P)2026 Hodder & Stoughton Limited

Critic reviews
Meg Shaffer continues to surprise and delight me with each book she writes. The Book Witch mixes romance and mystery and a deep appreciation of the power of stories to create the perfect love letter to readers (and writers) everywhere. This was such a fun read that had me laughing in one scene and tearing up in the next. It's the perfect book for anyone who has ever fallen in love with a fictional character (me!) or who has dreamed of walking through their favorite story. I loved it!
The Book Witch feels like falling through an incredibly fun and twisty rabbit hole while wrapped in a warm blanket and sipping your favorite cup of tea. Meg Shaffer brought my childhood dreams to life in a gem of a book that is inventive, cozy, and important all at the same time
Warning: reading this book may cause hours to vanish, your imagination to run wild, and the impossible desire to leap into the pages of your favorite stories. A clever and heart-felt adventure, this novel captures the giddy, perilous magic of losing yourself in a good story, just like Rainy herself does. A luminous, wildly imaginative delight that every book-lover will cherish

This book was just pure magic. The kind of story that feels cosy, whimsical and full of heart, like it was written for people who have ever loved books a bit too much and made that their entire personality. Guilty, obviously.
I absolutely adored the concept, the charm, the bookishness, and the way it celebrates stories and the people who love them. It was magical without feeling too heavy, adorable without being sickly sweet, and it had that lovely feeling of being wrapped up in a world where books really do matter.
And the quote:
“All stories are love stories when you love stories.”
Honestly? That has gone straight into my favourite quotes of all time. It’s beautiful, and it sums up exactly why this book worked so well for me.
A gorgeous, heartwarming little bookish spell. I’m very glad Goodreads nudged this one into my hands.
Magical and whimsical

The narration was spot on and really understood the assignment. I’ve had to stop listening to audio books before because the narrator was throwing away every gag. But not so here - her tone and delivery suited the first person main character perfectly. And delivered the wit always present in Shaffer’s books so well.
Really fun listen, definitely recommend.
Excellent story paired perfectly with the narrator

The narration was great and the way Duke was read was brilliant. His smooth talking lines are just fantastic xD

I didn't enjoy the twist so much. I loved finding out where her Mum had been that was great and where I'd hoped it would lead. But the "Maxine" layer felt like an added layer of complication. It was a great twist but I felt like it either needed more exploration/explanation (she doesn't tell Duke/forgets about her time in the real world?) and the ending was super random with her popping back to the real world again briefly. Not sure the purpose of that.
Great narration and unique story
