About this listen

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The official novelization of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the blockbuster film directed by J. J. Abrams.

More than thirty years ago, Star Wars burst onto the big screen and became a cultural phenomenon. Now the next adventures in this blockbuster saga are poised to captivate old and new fans alike—beginning with the highly anticipated Star Wars: The Force Awakens. And alongside the cinematic debut comes the thrilling novel adaptation by New York Times bestselling science fiction master Alan Dean Foster.

Set years after Return of the Jedi, this stunning new action-packed adventure rockets us back into the world of Princess Leia, Han Solo, Chewbacca, C-3PO, R2-D2, and Luke Skywalker, while introducing a host of exciting new characters. Darth Vader may have been redeemed and the Emperor vanquished, but peace can be fleeting, and evil does not easily relent. Yet the simple belief in good can still empower ordinary individuals to rise and meet the greatest challenges.

So return to that galaxy far, far away, and prepare yourself for what happens when the Force awakens. . . .

Praise for Star Wars: The Force Awakens

“Like all the best novelizations, Alan Dean Foster’s adaptation of Star Wars: The Force Awakens enriches the movie experience. The novel goes beyond simply giving us insight into the characters’ thoughts, with plenty of additional scenes painting a broader picture of the galaxy.”—New York Daily News

“Fast-moving, atmospheric and raises goose-bumps at just the right moments. [Foster] not only evokes entire onscreen worlds . . . he also gives us glimpses of an even more vast, unseen universe.”The Washington Post

“Was my experience of the film enriched by the book? Yes. No question. Is the novelization worth reading? Yes. . . . Foster has written a book that captures the spirit of the film, while presenting additional information that helps answer some of the questions that linger.”Coffee with Kenobi

Fantastic return to the series, it really felt as if this was a universe I could return to and explore. The new characters are mostly great. Didn't like Fin much. Turned traitor then had no trouble killing his squad mates. Rey is an exciting protagonist with interesting mysteries not yet solved. Kylo Ren was a good villain even though he seemed a bit immature, Hopefully they will give his character more depth in the next two movies. When It was finished I sat backed and laughed. With the top quality narration and fantastic sound effects I can tell I will love the movie.

amazing novelisation, simple to understand with a number of extra or expanded scenes which clear up a few questions brought about by the film. The narration on this is BRILLIANT. I can't believe its just one guy doing all the voices. His Han Solo and Snoke are excellent, and his C3PO sounds almost better than the real thing. Pure joy. Loved it.

I'd already seen the film before listening to the book, so I already had an opinion. I loved the film and the book expanded on a few things not before mentioned.
the downside of the book is Mark's narration. he is just terrible. His accents are not at all believable especially his English and Scottish (even his American was questionable!!). His over enthusiasm ruined a superb story.
other than that, I enjoyed the book

great story shame about the narrator.

If you loved the film but wanted more depth, this is a must listen, it includes more scenes than the film (most likely cut for timing) You get to learn more about what happened to PO as well as a better insight into the characters.

Narrator is great and the sounds and music accompanying help to make it feel more authentic.

If you could sum up Star Wars: The Force Awakens in three words, what would they be?

The Force Master!

What did you like best about this story?

I loved the whole plot, there wasn't a moment that didn't fit in. It all blended together nicely, and flowed like a story should.

What does Marc Thompson bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

I found that he brought characters to life, and gave them each a different personality that I hadn't seen or picked up in the film.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The moment, when Rey first encountered the force. That was particularly moving, as you connected with her and in my case I found that if I had been in her position then my reaction would have been exactly the same!

Any additional comments?

Overall, the story was extremely well told. I really enjoyed the flow of the story. The author/narrator could have gone into over the top mode because it is Star Wars but, managed to bring the story to life in many other ways that weren't seen in the film which I really liked.

Almost like reliving the film all over again!
