About this listen
He helped destroy her family. Now he wants to protect her. Dare she trust him?
For generations, magical sky shields have defended the Garden Kingdom from dragons and their savage riders. Now, the shield protecting the capital has been sabotaged, the castle destroyed, and all except the youngest member of the royal family slain.
A healer with a love for books, antiques, and avoiding family gatherings, Princess Syla never thought the future of the kingdom would rely upon her—or that assassins would be hunting her down. With only an aged bodyguard with bad knees to protect her, she’s in way over her head.
Then he shows up.
The powerful and deadly dragon rider Captain Vorik claims to be from a faction that wants peace, not war, and who opposed the attack. Supposedly, he and his dragon ally were sent to protect Syla.
With threats coming from all directions, she has no choice but to accept his help, but she doesn’t trust him—or her attraction to him.
Why is he really there? To kill her? To spy on her? To seduce her?
All Syla knows for certain is that she must get the best of Vorik before he can get the best of her. Her kingdom and her life depend on it.
Warning: Sky Shielder contains sex, violence, and arrogant and opinionated dragons.

Felt like I needed a bit more from the FMC, but looking forward to seeing her grow into her role.
Unexpectedly enjoyed the book.

It’s so severely underedited.
Didn’t get into it within 8 chapters so I threw in the towel on the 9th. I gave up with a whimper.
It’s not just that the author repeats information, it’s that they repeat the same exact information without building upon it.
There’s no added context, sentiment or development. Just repeated in case you’d forgotten within 5 mere minutes.
E.g. “Her parents had shown her where the shielders were.” “Her mother had taken her to see the shielders.” “They’d taken this same path when her parents had shown her the shielders a couple of years ago.”
“It was her parents who had taken the time to teach them the shielder locations.”
Good god. These are not direct quotes, just an example of the hammering you can expect.
Is this considered good writing? Rarely has an audiobook exposed to me just how badly the writing flows. Have we started expecting so little that this is rates above a 4? It’s disheartening.
Also, the main mail protagonist’s motives are phrased as a mistery in the novel snippet: Why is he really there? To kill her? To spy on her? To seduce her?
Well, let me disappoint you: he’s plotting the whole thing in, like, chapter 2. His motives are mapped out from the get go. There’s absolutely no tension to it, and even less mystery.
…
I get the occasional fun romp in fantasy land, so don’t be too discouraged - I’m sure there’s fun to be had reading this novel.
But I haven’t lost hope that there are fun romps in fantasy land that are actually well written and well edited, so I cannot put myself through this.
Nope - DNF
