Critic reviews

Gabor Maté’s connections—between the intensely personal and the global, the spiritual and the medical, the psychological and the political—are bold, wise and deeply moral. He is a healer to be cherished and this exciting book arrives at just the right time
His medical background and lucid writing style make complex biological processes accessible to non-scientific readers.
Rare and refreshing. . . . Here you will find family stories, an accessible description of brain development and sound information. You will also find hope.

I really liked this audiobook, Gabor Maté is one of our time's most insightful, wise and knowledgeable authors. I've read and listened to many of his books and I have always found them packed with really useful information. To my mind, his books are essential reading in the fields they cover.
Whilst I've never been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD myself, most of the content of this book could've been written about me. My eldest daughter was recently diagnosed with ADD and my youngest with autism.
I've somehow independently arrived at, and taken the path outlined in this book to overcome ADD without the benefit of the shortcut this book would've represented. I can, therefore, independently verify that this path is indeed correct; spiritual and emotional growth, supported with the necessary counselling, is the necessary path. I can attest that life is immeasurably better for having taken this path.
Please listen to and share this title with anyone who suffers with the difficulties that ADD/ADHD present. Not only to the individual, but parents, friends and siblings that are impacted. You will be doing them a great service.

This book has made such a difference to my life.

Life changing book

Maté works to provide the reader with a well-researched and grounded framework for ADD/ADHD as one of both neurology and childhood experience.

This more holistic view shows the reader how an abusive, neglectful, or simply inadequate childhood environment can hinder the development of those with particularly sensitive neurologies.

As someone with ADHD, and having read extensively around the topic of childhood trauma, I highly recommend this book. It has not only helped me to wrap a number of concepts into one integrated whole, but also given me a greater capacity for self-compassion and a direction forward in my own journey of healing.

An Empathetic and Holistic Approach

I have never before heard someone describe what it is like to be in my brain, to live my daily struggles which seem so effortless to others. Truly brilliant, an excellent read/listen. I would, as always, love Gabor to narrate his own words as I find his voice so soothing, but ironically, it is most likely his ADD which makes this not possible. Daniel always does a great job in his father’s absence.

Just brilliant!
