C'era una volta un taglialegna che aveva sette figli maschi. Il più piccolo e sveglio era lungo un pollice e si chiamava Pollicino.
Venne la brutta povertà, e siccome non c'era da mangiare, il taglialegna decise di abbandonare i figli. Un mattino li portò nel centro della foresta, e li lasciò lì.
