Critic reviews

"Written in clear, resonant prose, Goddard's first novel, nominated for the Booker prize, is a poised telling of a complex tale....In one sense a historical thriller, and in another a romantic novel of a love affair gone disastrously wrong, this is, in any case, a wonderful read." ( Publishers Weekly)
"Psychological drama and intricate plot will entice readers." ( Library Journal)

Dickensian in its characterisations and narrative. My enjoyment was enriched by Mr. Goddard's selection of historically significant chapters: the lingering death of Liberal ideals, the emergence of women combined as a political force, and a tragic rise in the cynicism of wealthy, powerful and mistaken men. All fuse and fizz throughout this fine work of the novelist's contrivance. There are some, few stories I wish I could un-remember, this is one. Paul Shelley 5stars

Classy and engrossing

I was worried that I would struggle with the length of the book. However I have found myself immersed in the story ideal for days of isolation.
