About this listen

An autobiographical short story about finding one’s place inside a Kyoto geisha house.

After meeting a geisha she admires, a young woman enters a world shaped by hierarchy and unspoken rules.

Quiet and minimalist, the story unfolds through small, everyday moments.

She sits on the tatami floor.

She serves her maiko and geiko seniors.

She waits before touching her chopsticks, and is repeatedly corrected on something that seems small: greeting.

Over time, she begins to understand what greeting asks of her.

I originally read the paperback version of this story and through that, found myself transported by Kobayashi-sans words. The audiobook version brings her words to life even more beautifully. I was able to close my eyes and again be transported as if I were there, but this time with her gentle voice guiding me through the scenes. Her words and the accompanying sounds and music brought an already beautiful story even more to life, by allowing you to feel as if you were there witnessing it.

Kobayashi-san truly has such a beautiful way with words, I have found it so very enjoyable and calming in hearing her read it herself. I truly hope she will share more of her writing with us in the future. Thank you.

A gentle guide through a beautiful story
