About this listen

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

“Metaxas is a scrupulous chronicler and has an eye for a good story. . . . full, instructive, and pacey.” —The Washington Post

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Eric Metaxas comes a brilliant and inspiring biography of the most influential man in modern history, Martin Luther, in time for the 500th anniversary of the Reformation

On All Hallow’s Eve in 1517, a young monk named Martin Luther posted a document he hoped would spark an academic debate, but that instead ignited a conflagration that would forever destroy the world he knew. Five hundred years after Luther’s now famous Ninety-five Theses appeared, Eric Metaxas, acclaimed biographer of the bestselling Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy and Amazing Grace: William Wilberforce and the Heroic Campaign to End Slavery, paints a startling portrait of the wild figure whose adamantine faith cracked the edifice of Western Christendom and dragged medieval Europe into the future. Written in riveting prose and impeccably researched, Martin Luther tells the searing tale of a humble man who, by bringing ugly truths to the highest seats of power, caused the explosion whose sound is still ringing in our ears. Luther’s monumental faith and courage gave birth to the ideals of liberty, equality, and individualism that today lie at the heart of all modern life.

I had alwsys been aware of Martin Luther, but had not really known just how much he let God use him to notice and find The Truth.

I was intrigued with this story of how he did it. Not just a man somewhere in history, but a brave and intelligent man, who was willing to speak out.

Thank you to Eric for all the work put into this biography.

A man of profound change

Very happy with this audiobook. The Author reads clearly and passionately. The book is well researched and avoids demonising Luther or simply making a stained glass window out of him! The inspiring Luther comes out clear: his background, ideas and their outcomes comes across very clear. One sees the absolute need for the reformation and nevertheless the real messiness of such a tumultuous but heroic change to Europe. The final chapters offer lessons for today and a reflection on the fruits of the reformation today both for Protestants and even Roman Catholics. The author is fair, not a raging hater of all things papal. So I recommend for inquiring Catholics too.

Excellent in every way!

I only ever knew the basics about Martin Luther so what an eye opener this book has been. The pivotal place this man played in Western culture really should be more widely taught in schools, he was certainly never mentioned when I was at school. I had thought his story might be quite dull and worthy but how wrong I was. The man, flaws and all comes across in Eric Metaxas writing as academically brilliant, intense, funny and deeply thoughtful and spiritual, a fully rounded human being who just happened to also change history. The fact that Martin Luther King senior changed his name after learning about him and Junior followed says much about the sheer scale of Martin Luther's relevance. The book is well researched but written in anything but a stuffy academic style so it flies along as well as any novel. A wonderful way to enter the subject.

This is a twenty hour Audible Book and therefore challenging to get through. I first listened in random chunks and because of the disjointed listen gave up by lack of continuity. But because I knew what a tremendous influence this man had over history and being used greatly by God I set myself a target of listening again and this time more consistently over a few days. I found that a great blessing, as I felt I got to know Luther almost personally. Loved all the different facets of the book especially Luther's life from birth until death including friends and family as well as the story of the Reformation and the way his thoughts that truth should not be enforced by power has influenced so much since. Fully recommended.

Worth the time to know this man
