THEY CAME TO TAKE HER BROTHER... INSTEAD THEY MET HER SCYTHE
Every year the gods demand boys for the mines. When Leina slaughters the soldiers who come for her brother, she expects death.
Instead, she's claimed by a goddess and thrown into a world of winged warhorses, warring gods, cursed monsters - and Ryot, the god-sworn warrior ordered to keep her in line.
Bound by duty, shaped by discipline, Ryot is everything she's not. But he sees the fire in her. The power. The danger.
Leina never asked to be chosen. And she's certainly not interested in saving the kingdom that enslaved her people.
But destiny has other plans... and the gods should fear what they've awakened.

Great story, shame FMC narration irritatingly over dramatic

This gave me Fourth Wing, We Who Will Die, Dire Bound & Blood Of Hercules vibes whilst still being it's own story, I would consider this as a fantasy with a slow burn romance and it was all done well, (there are actually multiple romances and I loved them all), It's a rich story and world full of lore, history, detail, and I hope I'm not off the mark but I'm excited that Caty Rogan might be another author a la Rebecca Yarros where there will be details in the story that seem insignificant at the time of mentioning but they're actually significant little clues for bigger parts of the plot later, that basically makes me want to re read the books time and again to find all the easter eggs and try to figure out what on earth is coming next, I had a few realisations in this one and then registered the subtle hints earlier on. (I actually made my partner jump of of his skin when I yelled one such realisation out about half way through)
Another thing I loved and this is personal opinion and preference of a middle aged reader/listener, there is a mentor/mentee relationship and training but it isn't an academy setting, don't get me wrong there are plenty of books I enjoy that are, but as a more mature person if I see "academy setting" it makes me a little hesistant to dive in in case the characters feel a little young and overall story feels a little YA, so I absolutely appreciated the characters being a little older than 18/19.
Overall all the story, world, the characters and not just the main characters were great and I'm very much looking forward to the next book, the narration was also great, I've listened to a lot of audiobooks and really like Zara Hampton-Brown anyway but I'd not heard Benjamin O'Mahony before - such a good choice! I think I've just found another narrator to add to my "i'm going to get that book purely because x is narrating it" list.
So Good!

I love a strong, badass FMC and Leina was a breath of fresh air.
The side characters are a fun addition, and the male narrator did a brilliant job with the different voices. Though I did struggle to differentiate some of the less unique male voices from time to time.
I’m familiar with the female narrator and I feel the depth of the emotion she brings enhances the experience.
I didn’t guess the plot twists. They weren’t jaw dropping, but satisfying, as I can see how these elements will make for a great story in the rest of the series.
Worth the hype!
